Remembering a Legend: Forbidden Apple
Forbidden Apple joined the TRF Second Chances Program at Lowell Correctional Institution on August 2, 2013, following a stellar career on the track and a well-earned retirement at Bridlewood Farm. A three-time Breeders’ Cup Mile competitor with 31 starts and over $1.6 million in earnings, he was every bit the superstar in both the racing world and our hearts.
For 12 treasured years, he called Lowell home. Beloved by the women in our Second Chances Program, Apple became known for his playful grooming brush antics and his love of treats. He wasn’t just a horse—they looked to him as a friend and teacher.
At Lowell, the day-to-day includes equine anatomy lessons, nutrition, injury care, and farm upkeep. But the emotional impact of Apple’s presence—and the bond he formed with his caregivers—spoke to the heart of what TRF is all about: dignified lifetime care.
Just after celebrating his 30th birthday, Apple passed away peacefully. His death marked the end of a life lived fully: three decades filled with achievement, affection, and transformations on both ends of the lead rope.
