Happy Hooves Retreat

When one door closes, another opens. The TRF’s Second Chances Program at Pleasant Valley State Prison in Coalinga, CA was made possible through a generous grant from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. With the grant concluding in June 2025 and Farm Manager and Vocational Instructor Heidi Richards preparing for retirement, the timing aligned perfectly.

Richards relocated to her ranch in Arkansas. As the TRF prepared to move the Oklahoma herd east, the opportunity to place horses with a trusted partner was ideal. A dedicated advocate since 2019, Heidi now oversees nearly 40 retired racehorses at Happy Hooves Retreat, where they remain under her devoted care.
