A Unique Learning Tool: TRF Second Chances Program Acquires Authentic Equine Skeleton

Thanks to the generosity of the T.E.R.F. Foundation, the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) Second Chances Program at Central Maryland Correctional has acquired a new addition to its educational curriculum—an authentic equine skeleton. This teaching tool has quickly become a centerpiece of the program, offering students an unparalleled opportunity to deepen their understanding of equine anatomy. At the TRF Second Chances Program, incarcerated individuals gain hands-on experience working with retired Thoroughbreds, developing valuable skills that prepare them for careers in the equine industry. With the addition of the full equine skeleton, students now have a 360-degree perspective on the intricate structure of the horse, helping them connect theory with real-world application. The horse skeleton serves as an essential model, enhancing nearly every aspect of the program’s instruction. Students can now study equine conformation and skeletal in a tangible, interactive way. The skeleton aids in discussions on:

Equine anatomy – Understanding how bones form the foundation for movement and strength.

Injuries and rehabilitation – Identifying how common fractures, strains, and structural weaknesses impact a horse’s health.

Conformation and structure – Examining how skeletal alignment affects a horse’s performance and longevity.

Musculature and movement – Connecting the bones to muscle function.

By physically interacting with the skeleton, students gain a realistic and comprehensive view of how each piece fits together, reinforcing their classroom learning with hands-on engagement. This invaluable resource makes complex anatomical concepts more accessible, enhancing retention and understanding.

The TRF Second Chances Program is deeply grateful to the T.E.R.F. Foundation for making this educational advancement possible.

In the 25 years that she worked overseeing Todd Pletcher’s racing stable, Maggie Sweet only had to concern herself about horses from the time they were two until around five. In the one year that she has been executive director of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, the nation’s oldest Thoroughbred retirement facility, she has learned that inspiring the industry to spend the money to care for them for the next 25 years is a much harder part of the bargain.
