Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation

Our first farm opened in 1983 at a correctional facility in New York, where inmates participated in a nationally accredited TRF Second Chances vocational training program in equine care and stable management. The TRF Second Chances program has since expanded to 9 states and provides an important "job" for horses whose racing-related injuries leave them unsuitable for a second career as a riding horse. The inmates learn marketable skills as well as invaluable lessons in compassion and responsibility. TRF also offers permanent retirement at 16 private farms around the country.

🐴Yesterday, Youth Equine Instructor Velvet Saulsberry took her students to the World Equestrian Center to watch the Ocala Winter Spectacular. The boys had an amazing time! They were able to watch a jumper class, and visit the bronze statue dedicated to Sgt. Reckless.
📚History: Staff Sergeant Reckless was a decorated warhorse who held official rank in the US Military and served with Fifth Marine Regiment during the Korean War. She was known for her bravery and for carrying ammunition under fire. She was awarded multiple military decorations, including two Purple Hearts. Sergeant Reckless is also honored with statues at the National Museum of the Marnie Corps and the Kentucky Horse Park.

In December 2024 you may remember we welcomed Salsa Jack (FL) to the TRF Herd at North Country Horses in New York all the way from Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare Inc. in Puerto Rico. A warhorse with 65 starts, here is an update on how he is settling in-
“Jack has overcome a few abscesses, but otherwise is thriving in the snowy weather of upstate New York! He is more rambunctious every day- and we want to thank @greatergoodcharities for their donation of UlcerGard to help Jack in his transition to the North!”

“To look into the eye of a horse is to see a reflection of yourself that you might've forgotten” - Gillian Mears

Saintly Ballad is blessed by the people who helped her find sanctuary at TRF Second Chances Juvenile Program in Ocala, Florida. Her nurturing nature has had a profound impact on the boys in the program. @gerdasequinerescue Mary Elena Moran

Under the watchful eye of Farm Manager Velvet Saulsberry she is a teacher to the youth. Please join us in congratulating this hard working young man for graduating!
