Nestled in the rolling hills of Central Maryland, the Second Chances Farm at Central Maryland Correctional Facility is a sanctuary for retired racehorses—none more emblematic of quiet resilience than Judge Luci. A proud great-granddaughter of Secretariat, her legacy reminds us that greatness isn’t just in speed—it’s in the impact we leave behind.
From Track to Transition
Racing under the name Judge Luci, she contested 33 starts between 2006 and 2007, claiming victory four times. After retiring in 2008, her future hung in the balance—facing the uncertain fate that too many Thoroughbreds experience after their final race.
A Rescue with Purpose
Thankfully, the TRF stepped in. Judge Luci was welcomed into the Second Chances Program at the Central Maryland Correctional Facility near Sykesville, where she found more than just a pasture—she found purpose. This innovative vocational and therapeutic program offers incarcerated individuals the opportunity to care for retired racehorses while learning skills in equine care, veterinary support, and barn management.

In this powerful environment, horses like Judge Luci become more than companions—they become teachers. Her gentle, observant nature has made her a favorite among the program’s participants.
