The TRF Second Chances Program at Lowell Correctional Institute is a sanctuary for 50 retired racehorses, set on 100 acres of beautiful grass fields. Hearing from the women in the program reveals the profound healing power of horses. The women’s daily routines cultivate a sense of achievement by caring for the horses and witnessing their growth. This experience fosters feelings of trust, love, and a renewed hope for a brighter future after their release, feelings many did not experience until they entered the program. The program also forges deep human bonds, often unexpected and sometimes resisted at first. Yet, the presence of the horses inevitably strengthens relationships among students. Women who naturally step into leadership roles become “Aides,” guiding their peers and sharing their knowledge. This cooperative learning environment creates synergy, where everyone’s contributions are interconnected. For many, it’s their first experience working in such a trusting, collaborative setting, making it a remarkable learning journey. Through rigorous training, students gain expertise in horse anatomy, equine management, equine nutrition, injury care, and farm maintenance skills. Graduates receive a certification reflecting their mastery, which opens doors to careers as farm employees, farriers, and vet assistants.
