Are there different options to partner with the TRF?
Yes! We offer companion adoptions (fully tax deductible), and day rate boarding options. Our goal is to provide elevated care for senior thoroughbreds who are in need of a soft place to land.
What does a day rate include?
The TRF typically pays the facility a day rate (cost per day per horse) that includes daily operations and oversight, hay, horse handling and care. The TRF in addition covers the grain, vet, farrier, worming and incidentals such as fly spray, wound care and fly masks.
What type of facility is the TRF looking for?
The TRF prioritizes open land and grazing acres for our herd of retirees. We opt for 2 acres per horse to allow for ample grazing and movement, with groups ideally between 5-12 horses. Facilities that have owners living on site, thoroughbred experience, stalls available in case of injury or illness, as well as those within a reasonable distance from our current farms will be given priority.
What are the visitation expectations?
The TRF conducts at a minimum quarterly visits to all facilities and farms, and will discuss with the landowner our ability to bring donors, supporters, and approved entities to see the horses in sanctuary. All visits would have ample notice to the farm owners and facility managers.
What other accreditations or items do TRF farms adhere to?
The TRF is accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. Representatives of these organizations will visit the farm at a minimum once per year to check on the horses and facility. The TRF provides all paperwork and logistics for these accreditations. The TRF also has its own Policies and Procedures outlining the expectations of care for our horses.
